/r/ing good literature. i.e. not contemporary and preferably by 19th century and before writers. One internet to the best one.

my favorites:

the count of monte cristo, alexandre dumas
les miserables, victor hugo

The beginnings of both books are a little heavy (esp. les miz) but they are amazing books. Make sure you get the UNABRIDGED versions.

war and peace is also a seminal work, but very heavy going.

Catcher in the Rye is a mixed book.

It's not a good book, but it is a good stepping stone to reading good books. The symbolism is easy to grasp and obvious, the writing style is not difficult and the message, while not universal, is important. Once a person grasps how it works, they can start reading books like books, instead of like magazines.

I thought it was fun, personally. It's like seeing a livejournal drama-whore from the 1950s.

Great book indeed. I was disappointed with the movie, however.
